The Surface Energy Budget at Gale Crater During the First 2500 Sols of the Mars Science Laboratory Mission

چکیده
We use in situ environmental measurements by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission to obtain surface energy budget (SEB) across Curiosity's traverse during first 2500 sols of mission. This includes values downwelling shortwave solar radiation, upwelling radiation reflected surface, longwave from atmosphere, emitted sensible heat flux associated with turbulent motions, and latent water phase changes. then analyze their temporal variation on different timescales relate this mechanisms causing these variations. Through its Rover Environmental Monitoring Station, MSL allows for a more accurate determination SEB than predecessors Mars. Moreover, unprecedented duration, cadence, frequency observations allow analyses diurnal interannual timescales. The results presented article can be used evaluate consistency predictions atmospheric numerical models, validate aerosol radiative properties under range dust conditions, understand available solar-powered missions, enable comparisons Perseverance rover at Jezero crater.

Gale crater: the Mars Science Laboratory/ Curiosity Rover Landing Site
Gale crater formed from an impact on Mars *3.6 billion years ago. It hosts a central mound nearly 100 km wide and *5 km high, consisting of layered rocks with a variety of textures and spectral properties. The oldest exposed layers contain variably hydrated sulphates and smectite clay minerals, implying an aqueous origin, whereas the younger layers higher on themound are covered by amantle of d...
متن کاملTerrain physical properties derived from orbital data and the first 360 sols of Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover observations in Gale Crater
Physical properties of terrains encountered by the Curiosity rover during the first 360 sols of operations have been inferred from analysis of the scour zones produced by Sky Crane Landing System engine plumes, wheel touch down dynamics, pits produced by Chemical Camera (ChemCam) laser shots, rover wheel traverses over rocks, the extent of sinkage into soils, and the magnitude and sign of rover...
متن کاملX-ray diffraction results from Mars Science Laboratory: mineralogy of Rocknest at Gale crater.
The Mars Science Laboratory rover Curiosity scooped samples of soil from the Rocknest aeolian bedform in Gale crater. Analysis of the soil with the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) x-ray diffraction (XRD) instrument revealed plagioclase (~An57), forsteritic olivine (~Fo62), augite, and pigeonite, with minor K-feldspar, magnetite, quartz, anhydrite, hematite, and ilmenite. The minor phases are ...
متن کاملUnusual Chemcam Targets Discovered Automatically in Curiosity’s First Ninety Sols in Gale Crater, Mars
Introduction: As mission data archives grow, it becomes progressively more difficult to spot individual observations that possess unusual features that merit further study. We have developed an automated method for prioritizing observations within large data sets. The DEMUD (Discovery through Eigenbasis Modeling of Uninteresting Data) algorithm [1] uses principal components modeling and reconst...
متن کاملMastcam Multispectral Imaging on the Mars Science Laboratory Rover: Wavelength Coverage and Imaging Strategies at the Gale Crater Field Site
Introduction: The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover "Curiosity" will land in Gale crater on 6 August 2012 UT to begin a mission to investigate the habitability of an ancient aqueous sedimentary environment on Mars. MSL carries a comprehensive payload of remote sensing and in situ instruments designed to characterize the geology, elemental composition, mineralogy, and geochemistry of materials...
